Ukraine: Trump admits diplomatic rupture and Macron admits “good reasons” for dialogue with Putin

US President Donald Trump today assumed a “complete” break with the “very stupid” US diplomacy “of the past” while his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron assumed there were “good reasons” to renew dialogue with Vladimir Putin.
Trump and Macron were speaking at the White House at a press conference after a bilateral meeting on the day that marks three years since the start of the Russian invasion, and while direct contacts are taking place between Washington and Moscow about a peace agreement in Ukraine, excluding the European bloc and Kiev.
“My administration is breaking completely with the foreign policy values of the previous administration and, frankly, the past. I campaigned against a very stupid foreign policy regime,” the US President said.
Macron admitted that Trump had “good reasons” to renew dialogue with Vladimir Putin, while appealing for “American support” in the event of sending European soldiers to Ukraine.
“There are good reasons for President Trump to resume dialogue with President Putin,” Macron said.
The French President stressed that achieving peace should not mean the “surrender” of Ukraine, but rather allowing the sovereignty of that country invaded by Russia in February 2022.
“This peace should not mean a surrender of Ukraine. It should not mean a ceasefire without guarantees. It should allow Ukrainian sovereignty and allow it to negotiate with other interested parties on issues that affect it,” he stressed.
